Those Who Came Up Empty

This will be a quick post with details and analysis to follow. Basically, I am looking to come up with a list of the top ten players who were brought to Philadelphia with expectations of contributing in a championship, yet left town before they accomplished the feat. Since we can accommodate only so many years, I will be examining the years in which our generation (the posters on this site- all 18-20 years old) can remember. For example (regardless of what you may say), we cannot clearly remember the 1993 Phillies. Therefore, I am limiting the period from 1995 to present. This list will not include (despite their recent slip) any current Eagles, including McNabb, Westbrook, or Dawkins. Nothing is over until it is over.

Note to the original Phillies core of Brett Myers, Jimmy Rollins, and Pat Burrell- YOU ARE OFF THE HOOK!!!

A rough first list, in no particular order (comments and suggestions welcomed):

Flyers- Mark Recchi, John LeClair, Eric Lindros, Keith Primeau, Jeremy Roenick, and Peter Forsberg

I loved all these guys, but they just couldn't get it done.

Key stats: Conference Finals losses in 1994-1995, 1999-2000, 2003-2004, and 2007-2008, Stanley Cup loss in 1996-1997

Good memories (See videos below):

Plays
- Simon Gagne's game-winning goal in Game 6 of the 2003-04 Eastern Conference finals against Tampa Bay, Jeremy Roenick's series-winning goal against the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals

Game- Down 2-1 to the Penguins in the 1999-2000 Eastern Conference Finals, Keith Primeau punched through a goal in the fifth OT to win the game for the Flyers and gain momentum in the series.

Bad memory: 1999-2000 Eastern Conference Finals vs. New Jersey Devils- The Flyers held a 3-1 series lead then...you know the rest

Wait and see: Simon Gagne, Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, Daniel Briere, Mike Knuble

Eagles- Ricky Watters, Irving Fryar (remember him!?!), Duce Staley, Javon Kearse, Jeremiah Trotter, and Terrell Owens

One word: Frustration...endless "what if's"

Key stats: NFC Championship losses in 2001, 2002, and 2003, Super Bowl loss in 2004

Good memories (See videos below):

Play- 4th and 26 vs. Packers

Game- Defeating the Falcons to excerise the NFC Championship game curse

Bad memories:

Plays- McNabb's final Super Bowl interception/Watching the Giants win in '07

Game- '04 Super Bowl loss and '02 NFC Championship game vs. Buccaneers

Wait and see: Brian Dawkins, Donovan McNabb, David Akers, Brain Westbrook, Shawn Andrews, Sheldon Brown, Asante Samuel, Lito Sheppard, and DeSean Jackson

76ers- Allen Iverson, Chris Webber, and Larry Brown

Had some great times watching Iverson through the years, but, ultimately, the Sixers had the unlucky fortune of being great during the Kobe-Shaq reign

Key stats: Playoffs: 1998-99, 1999-2000, 2000-01, 2001-02, 2002-03, 2004-05, 2007-08, NBA Finals loss in 2001

Good memories:

Play- Iverson stepping over Tyron Lue after hitting a crucial jumper (Game 1 2000-01 NBA Finals, Iverson crossing over Michael Jordan during his rookie year

Game- Dramatic Game 1 win over the Lakers, 2000-01 Finals

Bad memories: The endless coaching changes (Larry Brown to Randy Ayers to Chris Ford to Jim O'Brien to Maurice Cheeks in a two-year span, Allen Iverson's departure in December 2006

Wait and see: Elton Brand, Andre Iguodala, Andre Miller, Thaddeus Young

Phillies- Bobby Abreu, Scott Rolen, Billy Wagner, Jim Thome, Curt Schilling, and Aaron Rowand

Key stats: National League East division champions 2007, 2008...WORLD SERIES CHAMPS 2008

Good memories: Self-explanatory...
